I think that it's really interesting that in a time of great social and political upheaval New Hollywood turned to telling these really dark stories and character studies of anti-heroes such as Jake LaMotta or Travis Bickel in Taxi Driver. I wonder how much of this was motivated by a critique of mainstream culture and how much was motivated just by a desire to tell different kinds of stories.
